About Mosquitoes
It’s safe to say that everyone has experienced a mosquito bite at one time or another, and in truth, you’ve probably been bitten many times in your life. Mosquitoes are a species of fly in the order Diptera (“two wings”) that use their sucking mouthparts to gorge on animal blood.
There are over 200 hundred different mosquito species throughout the US, with 52 of those living and feeding throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Of those 52 species, the most common disease-spreaders are mosquitoes of the Aedes and Culex species which spread eastern equine encephalitis, and West Nile Virus.
When Should You Treat for Mosquitoes and Ticks?
You should treat for mosquitoes and ticks before pests become active, which is late spring. Scheduling service before peak season can head problems off rather than chasing them later.
Tick Season Runs Early Spring Through Late Summer
Ticks ramp up as the weather gets warmer. Check yourself, children, and pets after coming inside, focusing on:

Mosquitoes Peak July Through September

What Diseases Do Mosquitoes and Ticks Carry?

Three ticks account for a majority of the local risk:
- Black-Legged (Deer) Tick: The primary carrier of Lyme disease
- American Dog Tick: Can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever
- Lone Star Tick: So far found only in southeastern Massachusetts; transmits ehrlichiosis
Mosquito-Borne Diseases
West Nile virus is mainly spread by Culex mosquitoes and is the most common mosquito-borne illness in the area. Eastern Equine Encephalitis is rare but quite serious; its mosquito vectors breed in freshwater hardwood swamps. Regionally, most cases have come from the following counties:

- Plymouth
- Norfolk
