Tree Planting 101 – 3 Things to Consider!
Hardiness Zones Matter
The USDA has established “plant hardiness zones” based on a region’s average minimum temperature. The hardiness zones in Massachusetts are relatively moderate and range from 5a in the Berkshire Mountains to 7a on Cape Cod, while most areas in coastal Massachusetts are designated zone 6b. Make sure you plant trees that are able to grow in your hardiness zone!
Understand Your Trees’ Water Needs
While the rainfall in the greater South Easton area is usually sufficient for many plants, newly planted trees may need more watering and soil monitoring – especially during warm weather.
Evergreens can sometimes dry out over the winter when the ground freezes. Avoid this with sufficient watering all summer and into the fall before the first freeze.
The Dirt on Soils
Massachusetts has some of the richest soil in the world which is great since it allows our trees and shrubs to thrive. However, it’s a good idea to have your soil tested to ensure optimal pH, moisture level, and compaction. This also allows you to detect nutrient deficiencies for optimal fertilizer treatments.
